Commisions
I am open to doing commission under the right circumstances; but I do have unconscionably harsh terms.
Early on I struggled with commissions. I realised it was largely because when painting I kept thinking of what the client wanted, instead of just painting for myself. Also I hated the thought of a customer not really liking what I produced and yet being so polite as to pay for and take the painting.
To overcome these challenges I have initiated the following process:
- Discuss what is wanted
Sometimes it is with reference to another painting, or a general idea, colours are often discussed. The balance is to get a good idea of what is desired but not too much detail. Less is more. Room is needed for some original idea. - Agree a price
- Be patient
Understand if there’s some urgency but otherwise be prepared for me to work at my own pace. - I will probably produce a suite of works
I paint two or three pieces for you to choose from.
This free things up for me. - Most importantly do not buy if it doesn’t grab you.
I still win because I have the paintings I like.
